Make a Scarecrow for Halloween: Unique and Festive Decoration

How to Make a Scarecrow

What if you never have made a scarecrow before and have no idea how to go about it?

Straw (rags, leaves, or other stuffing materials are great substitutes) Burlap sack or pillowcase (optional) Old pantyhose and/or a Old button down shirt Old pants Safety pins Twine or other string – Colored felt or other scrap fabric (or markers or paint) to make your face Glue – Hats, shoes, gloves, bandanas and other accessories (optional but highly recommended for the most fun results)

Scarecrows are often used as decorations in Halloween parades and celebrations. They are also commonly seen at fairs and festivals. In some countries, they are used during Mardi Gras festivities. Scarecrows are traditionally made out of straw, hay or corn husks. But what about those who want something a little fancier? With a few simple supplies, you can make your very own scarecrow.

Create the Top Half

Scarecrows are traditionally made out of straw, hay or corn husks. But what about those who want something a little fancier? With a few simple supplies, you can make your very own scarecrow. Start by making a base out of sticks and twigs. Next, cut a piece of fabric into strips long enough to wrap around the body of your scarecrow twice. Then, use a needle and thread to sew the fabric together.

Once you’ve got the fabric wrapped around the stick frame, tie off the bottom end with twine or string. Now, fill the remaining space with dry grasses or straw. Stuffing the chest cavity gives the appearance of a person’s rib cage. Use a small length of twig or wood to prop up the head of your scarecrow.

Finally, finish the look with some eyes and a face. You can find ideas online or even purchase ready-made scarecrow parts.

Create the Bottom Half

The second half of our scarecrow costume is just as important as the first one. Without a sturdy base we wouldn’t be able to stand up tall and proud. Our base consists of a pair of jeans stuffed with newspaper and attached to each leg via belts and suspenders.

Once the pants are securely tied off, we stuff them with newspapers and tape to keep the stuffing inside . Next, we tie off the bottoms of the pants and bring the twine around to the front where we secure it to the suspenders . This completes the bottom portion of our scarecrow outfit. Now let’s move onto the head!

Head

A scarecrow is easy to build. But there are many ways to add finishing touches to give it personality and character. Here are four ideas you might want to try.Scarecrow Red Pants

1. Make Your Scarecrow Look Like It Has A Story

Include a story about the person who built the scarecrow. For example, write a short biography about him/her. Or include a quote from someone famous. Or tell a scary tale about the scarecrow.

Create Scary Eyes

Draw black circles around the eyes of your scarecrow. This gives the appearance of dark shadows under the eyes. If you don’t know how to draw eyes, check out our tutorial here.

Give Your Scarecrow Personality

Add facial features like eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, etc., to make your scarecrow unique. You could use clay and paint for this step. Then attach a straw hat or a piece of fabric to finish the look.
